How did you two meet? Tell us your story.
We like to say that, even though we grew up in the same small town, it took us going around the world to find each other. We literally know all of the same people, and our best friends growing up are brother and sister–which means we probably even had play dates or sleepovers at the same house at the same time, just didn’t know our future spouse was in the other room. It wasn’t until 2012 that our Pastor had the brilliant idea to introduce us. But, I (Emily) was getting ready to move overseas for 2 years and Jimmy didn’t think he had a chance. But, at a dimly lit Christmas Eve service, we were officially introduced. He knew right away that he wanted to pursue me and began praying for an opportunity to get to know me better. Just 2 weeks before I left the country, he worked up the courage to ask me out–and all his pleading with God had worked because I agreed! We spent a few days together before Jimmy headed back to Chicago to finish school and I moved to Asia. Our relationship switched to FaceTime dates and we fell in love even though 7,000 miles separated us!
Describe the proposal.
We hadn’t seen each other for nearly 6 months when Jimmy was coming to Asia. (The same week we met, the organization I worked for had asked Jimmy to come to the same country I would be in for the summer.) Anyways, so we were both completely elated that we would be reunited at last. Jimmy told me where to meet him at the airport and as soon as we hugged and were finally able to say “I love you” in person, Jimmy got down on his knee and proposed! I gave an ecstatic “yes!”
What was your favorite memory about your proposal?
When it finally sunk in that we were getting married, we knew there would eventually be an end to long distance in the near future! That was what kept us going through the next 6 months of long distance too.
What do you love most about each other?
Emily: I love the way Jimmy loves–not just me, but God, the people around him, even strangers. He loves so selflessly and patiently and reflects the heart of God in so many ways.
Jimmy: What I love most about my wife is her faithfulness to The Lord and her desire to display His image better and better every single day, especially in the way she serves and loves others.
