We asked:

What is your love story?

Amanda: We met through mutual friends while students at the great UW-Madison and quickly became close friends. After being great friends for years we casually date, but go our separate ways Senior year. A few years later we find ourselves at my favorite place in Chicago, the Lakeshore Path, and realize the spark is still there. With Nick living abroad in Abu Dhabi at the time, we begin a super long distance relationship.

Describe the proposal.

Amanda: I always thought the proposal would happen in Madison, where we met, but Nick always knew he would propose in Chicago, the place that played a huge role in our “second chance”. The first weekend of last April we weren’t planning on seeing each other – Nick had a meeting with our builder (we were starting the process of building a house at the time) early Saturday morning and I had a college girls reunion in Chicago Saturday night. I came home Friday night and was doing laundry and other random errands before Saturday when I heard a knock on my apartment door. I look through my peep hole and it was Nick – since I wasn’t expecting to see him I opened the door and gave him an excited hug. I didn’t think anything out of the ordinary until he didn’t say a word and guided me to my desk chair. (Flashback to 1.5 years earlier: Nick drove to Chicago in the middle of the night to profess his feelings for me; he made the sweetest and most heartfelt speech I’ve ever heard while I was sitting in my desk chair.) As soon as he took me by the shoulders and had me sit in the chair I knew what was happening and starting freaking out, asking him “what are you doing?” over and over as my heart raced. With me in the same position I was in when we got back together and Nick kneeling before me, he said another extremely amazing speech that ended with, “Amanda Leigh, will you marry me?”. It was the most heartfelt, perfect proposal.

What was your favorite memory of the proposal?

Amanda: The fact that it was a complete surprise – and Nick’s known for not being able to keep surprises, especially when it comes to me.

Nick: That Amanda cried doesn’t remember what I said because she was so caught up in the moment.

What was your favorite part of your engagement session?

Amanda: Returning to the place that we met nine years ago to take engagement photos was pretty amazing. And the beautiful weather!

Nick: Feeling like I couldn’t do anything wrong and being told I looked good for two hours!

How did you decide which settings you wanted to incorporate into your photos?

Amanda: We knew we wanted to head to downtown Madison, the place where we met and both love so much, and really wanted “classic Madison” locations for our pictures. Since our wedding will be inside, we also wanted great outside locations that would highlight Madison’s beautiful fall colors.

What do you love most about each other?

Nick: That we complement and challenge each other, talk about everything and anything openly, and have a strong relationship built on honesty and trust.

Amanda: I love Nick’s ability to laugh and smile no matter what, that he’s so passionate for so many things, and has a sense of adventure that has (literally!) taken me all over the world.
