How did you two meet?
We met through a mutual friend to play horse shoes one Sunday afternoon. We already attended the same church and began to lead Young Life together at ECU. Over the next four years that game of horse shoes turned into a sweet friendship that included choreographing dances and making up skits for Young Life, playing outside (a lot!), going to church together, having meaningful conversations, to falling in love.
Describe the proposal:
Meredith loves the holidays – especially Christmas – and all of the celebrations and fun that comes along with it. She asked if we could make ornaments, to which Matthew first replied, “yeah right!” Meredith thought that ornament making was out of the picture, while in the background, Matthew had bought a ring and placed it on the inside of an ornament. He told Meredith that he had thought about her idea to make ornaments and agreed to make them on November 20, 2013 (a Wednesday night). He even said that they could watch Christmas movies and listen to Christmas music while making ornaments. After dinner that night, Matthew began getting the evening’s activities ready and Meredith opened the ornament with the ring. After a moment of shock and looking around, Matthew had gotten down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage. She said “yes!”
What is your favorite memory from your proposal?
Meredith’s moment: I think my favorite thing about our proposal was how hard he worked to make it a total surprise. He knew that I loved Christmas and he set up a special night during the week for us to spend time together and decorate Christmas ornaments. The whole night was very “us” and I loved that.
Matthew’s moment: I loved the absolute surprise that brushed across Meredith’s face and actions as she realized that there was a ring hanging on the inside of her ornament. I loved her question “Are we really getting married?” and then saying “yes.”
What do you love most about each other?
Matthew: I love her faith, her knowledge, her compassion and her humility. I love that she loves someone like me. I love how beautiful she is.
Meredith: I love his heart for Jesus, the amount of effort and passion he puts into everything he does, his ability to make me laugh even on a rough day, the fun we have together doing even the most ordinary things and of course, how handsome he is.
